Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson pulled off injured in the eighth minute of the match against Newcastle at St James' Park after suffering a blow to teammate Kyle Walker a minute and a half into an opponent's goal which was eventually disallowed for offside.
The goalkeeper was treated on the pitch for a few minutes with a bandage on the joint, but eventually realised he was in no fit state to continue and was replaced by Stefan Ortega.
The good news for Pep Guardiola was that Ederson left the pitch under his own steam. And despite Bernardo Silva's goal to break the deadlock, Alexander Isak equalised on the eve of half-time and Anthony Gordon gave the Magpies the lead.
Manchester City will report on the progress of their first-choice goalkeeper, who is still awaiting medical tests and further developments. Huge blow for the Sky Blues with the Champions League looming on the horizon.
