The Qatar World Cup winner also led Miami to the US Open Cup final, but missed it through injury and his team was defeated by Houston Dynamo.
Despite scoring 11 goals in his first 14 games for Inter Miami, Messi was unable to help his team qualify for the MLS playoffs. However, the Argentinian capped an incredible year in which he won the eighth Ballon d'Or of his career with this award.
