Tottenham Hotspur have yet to reap the sporting rewards of their €30 million investment in Sergio Reguilon. This is the figure that the English side paid Real Madrid in September 2020 to sign a full-back with a bright future and who was trained in one of the best youth academies in Europe. Four years later, he has still not found a place either in his native country or in England.
Spurs loaned him out last season to Atletico, where he did not work out. This season, he was playing for Manchester United and the same thing has happened to him, although he has made an improvement because, in the half season he has been under Erik ten Hag, he has already been on the pitch more than in the whole 22/23 season under Diego Simeone. Even so, the Dutch coach does not count on him, so he has let his board know that he can let him go.
That's where Brentford come in. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Bees have reached a deal to sign him on loan until the summer. It is not known, for the moment, what percentage of his salary would be covered, although it is quite likely to be a high percentage in order to reduce Tottenham's 'Financial Fair Play'.
Brentford have suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, so this addition could help them improve their defensive performance. A medical is expected to take place later on Wednesday and the deal is expected to be completed without an option to buy. Reguilon is under contract until 2026 at Tottenham and Spurs want to rethink what to do with him in six months' time when he returns.
